ANAMNESIS

The Anamnesis chapter includes Oleg Klimov's diary entries and observations during the periods of his photography in closed medical institutions - psychoneurological institutions and psychiatric hospitals in Russia. 

Every morning at eight o'clock, I go to the canteen for breakfast. It's dark and frosty. I can hear the snow crunching under my feet, as if I'm treading on the white keys of a giant grand piano, composing my own music. If you listen closely to my footsteps, you can easily discern what I'm thinking and what mood I'm in. Realizing this makes me more attentive to the people around me. They, too, play their own music. The sounds they produce are like a system of signs, often beyond my comprehension. Here, such people are called crazy, but I don't like that —I call them foreigners. I live among them [...]

During quiet hours, when most patients prefer to watch TV, I try to teach some of them simple arithmetic. Two of them can already count, but only up to ten, because they each have only ten fingers. But one of them now knows how to add and subtract natural numbers. He is delighted when I tell him, smiling, ‘The answer is right!’ [...]
