PERSONAL FILE

The chapter Personal File includes portraits of residents of residential psychoneurological institution (or, in Russian, a PNI) in Siberia taken by Oleg Klimov for each patient, as well as for medical personal files and photo exhibition, which never took place.

The portraits of my heroes, taken for the personal files of PNI's  patients, make me want to run away at night and not think about anything - never before have I encountered such a concentration of madness and ugliness at the same time. The more I look at them, the less I realise why I thought that the portraits hanging in the corridors of the PNI would appeal to its patients? Don't they realise how ugly and ridiculous they look in these pictures? Maybe it would be better if the usual pictures of dogs and kitties remained on the walls. Perhaps everyone would be calmer that way. Maybe it would be better to fill the space with orthodox icons and images of saints, as the local priest suggests: let them pray without realising who they are, why they live and what they are doing here [...]
